What a whirlwind my life has been lately! I have never been so busy in my life... but I am loving every minute of it. I have the most fantastic kindergarten class... they are lots of fun and so dang cute! We are having a great time singing and playing... next week we start our curriculum! I have 18, which is very small, so I have had lots of time for one-on-one.

A much needed update...

So... I am way behind on updating my blog! You wouldn't believe all that has happened in my life in the last month! So much has happened so quickly that I haven't found the time to just sit back and reflect on it all. So here I go...

Milestone #1 -- I moved to Omaha!

After two years of a long-distance relationship... I finally moved to Omaha! On May 1st, Tyson and I moved into our new, cute townhome. It's small, but cozy, and I really love it. After getting engaged in December, I knew it wouldn't be long until I made the "big move." It's only 3 hours away... but it is still a completely new city and experience to me. I'm so used to being down the street from my parents and my best friend... so this has taken a little adjusting for me. And not to mention... I'm adjusting to living with a boy! :) Ha ha... just kidding! We are really enjoying Omaha - please come visit! We have a fully-functional guest room that is just waiting to be used! :)

Milestone #2 -- I got my first teaching job!

That's right... I am officially a kindergarten teacher! I am so excited (and nervous) about the upcoming year! I knew that I wanted to work in the Millard school district in Omaha because they are known for their quality of schools and teacher support. I interviewed for several 1st and 2nd grade positions, but nothing fit quite right. I was getting a little discouraged because there was only one kindergarten opening in the district (out of 25 elementary schools!) But, I got an interview for that position and absolutely loved the teachers who interviewed me and thought the principal was wonderful! Not to mention, the school was located in a great neighborhood. So, I interviewed on a Wednesday morning, and my phone rang Wednesday evening with an offer!!! I, of course, accepted on the spot! The next week, I signed my contract with the district and it was official! I am a kindergarten teacher at Morton Elementary! I can't wait for August!

Oh... and Tyson and I got our amazing engagement pictures back! Our photographer (Erica May out of KC) is phenomenal. I am so happy with the results and can't wait to work with her in October. If you want to check them out, just click the link below and sign into Pictage...

Sisters

Recently, I helped my mom clean out the closet in my childhood bedroom. It was funny to look at  all the evidence of my childhood... boxes and boxes of notes from high school, cheerleading t-shirts, elementary school diaries, and lots of cassette tapes (including Michael and Janet Jackson, Wilson Phillips, Sesame Street Read-alongs, and Madonna to name a few!)
While digging through a box of books, I found a little keepsake book my sister, Jennifer, gave me 5 years ago for Christmas. I had completely forgotten about it and probably hadn't opened it since that year. However,  I feel like I have found a little treasure. It will most definitely sit on my desk in my classroom to remind me of how lucky I am.

The book is called "Sisters - Wit, Wisdom, and Fun" - and it pretty much sums up what life is like with sisters. I have 2 wonderful sisters, Jessica (24) who lives in Minneapolis, and Jennifer (27) who lives in Boston. Reading through this book made me realize that even though we may be far apart, sisters have a very special bond. I am so lucky to have constant love, support, and friendship everyday of my life.
I hope all of you reading this are lucky enough to have sisters like me. I'm a little partial, but "3 girl families" are extra special in their own little ways. So, I thought I would share some of my favorite passages from this book... and I know that if you have sisters, you will know exactly what these words mean.

Sisters are like lashes with old mascara... they stick together.
A sister is why your favorite shoes are missing.
Sisters will forgive anything, but they'll use it as blackmail later.
A sister remembers the crazy things you wore (and did) in high school - and won't let you forget, either!
Having a sister means never having to go to the movies alone.
Having a sister is better than having a therapist... and cheaper, too.
Sisters are reasons to buy even more photo frames.
A sister will tell you if your jeans make you look fat.
Having a sister doubles your wardrobe.
Having a sister is like having the best part of yourself to rely on.
Sisters love you when it feels like no one else does.
Sisters can see when you're the real you and when you're fake you - and they like the real you better.
Sisters know the true meaning of conspiracy.
A sister always knows when to bring tissues and when to bring champagne.
Jobs, men, and apartments come and go, but sisters are forever.
A sister is the fastest road back home.
Having a sister means you'll always have someone who'll split dessert.
Sisters offer the honest opinion you can't get from anyone else - even when you don't want it.

She stole your crayons, your clothes, and maybe a boyfriend or two, but somewhere along the way, she also stole your heart.

I love you Jenn and Jess... I couldn't live without you!

Our dear Sophie...

The last week has definitely been tough. Our sweet 6-month-old puppy has been in the hospital at the KSU Veterinary Clinic. For anyone who has a dog or ever experienced having a sick dog, you know how hard it is! I am a true believer that dogs have souls and personalities just like humans do and dogs are truly family members in my eyes. But, I am writing this entry for 2 reasons... so please read this if you are a dog owner or lover!

1. When you are getting your dog "fixed," please pay the extra money for the preliminary blood work! Because it is optional, many people do not see it as necessary. But Sophie is the perfect example of why it is necessary! On her first scheduled spaying, the vet said she did not feel comfortable performing the surgery because her blood work showed that her liver values were high. Assuming it was a small infection, we gave Sophie antibiotics and scheduled another appointment for the surgery. On this second attempt, her liver values were still high, so it was obviously not an infection. We brought Sophie to the KSU Vet Clinic for a consultation and another round of tests. Poor Sophie had no idea why we were putting her through all this because she was the happiest puppy! She didn't know she was sick because she felt just fine. But, the KSU blood tests and ultrasound showed that Sophie had a "liver shunt," meaning that she had a blood vessel from her intestines bypassing her liver (where blood is filtered) and circulating toxic blood into her blood stream. Needless to say, this is a very, very bad thing! It not only affects their blood, but also their digestive system and brain functioning. This type of surgery is very serious and risky, but after hearing that without the surgery Sophie would be on medicine for the rest of her life (which would be short), we knew the only thing to do would be to proceed with the surgery. The good news: Sophie made it through her surgery and is currently in the ICU at the KSU Vet hospital. After 6 days of intense monitoring, we will be bringing her home and carefully nursing her back to 100% for the next month. The moral of the story: Without opting for the preliminary blood test, Sophie could have died during her spaying surgery (because her unhealthy liver would have not been able to handle the anesthesia) or she would have lived a very hard life due to the complications of the liver shunt. So... make sure to have blood work done even when it is optional!!!

2. I have two wonderful recommendations: Little Apple Vet Clinic and the KSU Vet Clinic. Our vet at Little Apple caught the abnormal blood work when many others may have shrugged it off. And the KSU Vet Clinic has been nothing but wonderful throughout this experience. They have called us numerous times a day, allowed us to visit, explained all the risks and situations in easy-to-understand terms, and provided Sophie with so much love and attention. I highly recommend both of these services!

So, please keep our darling Sophie in your thoughts and prayers as she recovers! We are definitely not "in the clear" with the  complications, but we are well on our way!

I will leave you with one of my favorite quotes: "Everyone is born so they can learn how to live a good life - like loving everybody and being nice. Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long."
